X Misleading and Manipulated Media Dashboard
A dashboard for tracking media on X that Community Notes members have labelled as misleading or manipulated.
This dashboard features posts on X that have been flagged for potentially containing misleading or manipulated media. The posts are flagged by X users who participate in X's Community Notes program, where users, rather than experts, provide context about a post and adjudicate its accuracy. The dashboard is designed to provide researchers and the public with a comprehensive overview of Community Notes data, enabling users to easily analyze the information, identify issues, and uncover opportunities to improve crowdsourced content moderation systems like Community Notes. It is unique in that it can display Community Notes that have not yet met the criteria for visibility on the X platform.
The dashboard shows two types of notes:- Visible notes: Those that have met the required threshold and are considered helpful and accurate by the community.
- Non-visible notes: Those that haven't met the criteria and are not visible to the general public.
For a note to be visible to everyone on X, it must meet specific criteria:
- Accuracy and helpfulness: The note must provide valuable, relevant context or clarification.
- Approval by the community: Other users vote on notes, and the community decides whether the note is credible.
- Threshold of ratings: A note must receive enough positive votes and pass certain thresholds to be considered verified for visibility.
While crowdsourced content moderation systems, like the one used by X and the upcoming version from Meta, can play a role in reducing the spread of misinformation, they are not a panacea. Over 90% of proposed community notes on X never become visible on the X app. A crowdsourced solution that rejects 90% of the crowd's submissions is not sustainable in the long term. It sends a message to the crowd that their contributions and assessments are not welcomed by design.
